WUSTL expands supercomputer with grant

WUSTL is upgrading and expanding its high-performance computer, allowing researchers to process large amounts of data significantly faster. The upgrade is possible thanks to a nearly $600,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health paired with funds from the School of Engineering & Applied Science and the School of Medicine’s Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology.

Drug users switch to heroin because it’s cheap, easy to get

A nationwide survey of heroin users indicates they are attracted to the drug not only for the “high” but because it is less expensive and easier to get than prescription painkillers. Shown is the study’s principal investigator, Theodore J. Cicero, PhD, of the School of Medicine.

Economist attends White House meeting to prepare for working families summit

In preparation for a summit later this month on working families, Robert Pollak, PhD, an expert on family economics, recently attended a meeting at the White House. He met with other academic leaders and senior administration officials to discuss the implications of demographic and other changes for 21st-century workplaces.

Report service projects for Community Counts database

 

 

The Gephardt Institute for Public Service maintains the Community Counts database to track community service activities by WUSTL schools and organizations. It’s time to submit initiatives from the 2013-14 academic year. The deadline is June 30. Each submitted initiative will be entered into a drawing for a $500 grant.

Women’s Building being renovated, some offices moved

The lower level of the Women’s Building, on the Danforth Campus, is undergoing renovations this summer, so some offices are being relocated. Construction should be complete in October.
